In July 2024, E-TANDEM’s project coordinator, Gonzalo Prieto (ITQ Institute for Chemical Technology, CSIC-UPV), attended the International C1Chem Symposium in Lille, France. This event gathered scientists and technologists from around the world to discuss recent advances and future trends in the valorization of renewable C1 feedstocks into synthetic (e)fuels and platform chemicals.
Prieto delivered a keynote lecture on tandem catalysis approaches that integrate C–C chain propagation and heteroatom functionalization from syngas. He also highlighted the activities of the Horizon Europe E-TANDEM project, which focuses on leveraging tandem catalysis to selectively produce higher oxygenate e-fuels as synthetic replacements for fossil diesel, directly from renewable e-syngas. Additionally, Raphaël Le Gall, head of the CO2 Utilization program at TotalEnergies and a member of the E-TANDEM stakeholder board, presented a keynote lecture outlining TotalEnergies’ perspective on the necessary steps toward the affordable and efficient industrialization of e-fuel production. Alberto Rodriguez-Gomez, CSIC researcher actively involved in the coordination of Work Package 2 activities at E-TANDEM, also attended the symposium.
The meeting provided an excellent forum to highlight the possibilities that catalysis offers in the context of the energy transition for the transport sector. It also helped establish key principles for aligning the distribution of products from catalytic transformations with the performance requirements and regulatory standards for renewable synthetic fuels of non-biological origin.
