Event Recap: E-Meeting: Closing the Gaps in Bio/E-Fuels — Standards, Regulation, and Market Readiness

On 4 November, the BIOCTANE and E-TANDEM Horizon Europe projects jointly hosted the E-Meeting: Closing the Gaps in Bio/E-Fuels — Standards, Regulation, and Market Readiness. The online session gathered experts from research, industry, and policy to discuss the latest advances in biogenic and e-fuels for the aviation, heavy-duty, and maritime sectors—areas where decarbonization remains particularly challenging.

Participants benefited from in-depth presentations by Tec4Fuels and Shell, who outlined the evolving technological and regulatory landscape for sustainable fuels.

The session featured three insightful presentations:

Their contributions shed light on the evolving challenges and opportunities in standardization, certification, and regulatory requirements—key elements in advancing sustainable fuels toward large-scale market adoption.

A key highlight of the event was the roundtable discussion

A lively roundtable discussion followed, moderated by Patricia Pizarro (IMDEA), Coordinator of BIOCTANE, and Gonzalo Prieto (ITQ, CSIC-UPV), Coordinator of E-TANDEM.

Participants explored the role of policy in accelerating the transition to sustainable fuels. The debate centered on how far European governments should go in applying carbon taxation to stimulate the adoption of biofuels and e-fuels. Speakers reflected on whether clearer, more ambitious €/tCO₂ pricing guidelines—covering both the well-to-tank and tank-to-wheel phases—could help close the competitiveness gap with fossil fuels. This exchange highlighted a shared recognition that strong, predictable policy signals will be essential to support investment, scale-up, and market readiness across the sustainable fuels landscape.
